Carhartt SS19
The weight of rugged textiles and shapes that work hard for your wardrobe account for much of utility’s obvious appeal, but it's not often we see its softer side. Carhartt WIP puts right to that wrong, with a SS19 collection that treads a tense line between strength and sensitivity, and the beauty to be found when the poles are permitted to coexist. With a campaign shot by Barcelona photographer Carlota Guerrero, the airy candor of the imagery speaks the truth of the heavy, cool pastel capsule, while model and singer Gabriela Richardson makes the perfect muse for the mood. Boxy and brutish separates arrive in depth-charged sugar hues, the Michigan Chore Coat and Pierce Pants fashioned from Newcomb cotton drill, dyed in soft aloe and lavender tones, and the classic Trucker touts Tango orange and peach. Between mensy shirts and overalls, single jersey short sleeves speak of the hypernormality of the ‘90s, plain cuts topped with a contrast overstitching, or striped with slim bars of red and yolk yellow. Thick solid-color sweatshirts are embroidered with blunt graphic logos before being slipped into straight-fit mini skirts, set with high waists and buttressed by bartack stitching at the crucial stress points. There’s something beautifully reassuring about cuts crafted with such careful attention to their duty. Above all else, these are pieces primed for the daily grind, unafraid to put a little work into romance.
