EWE Studio

Creating from the beating heart of Mexico City, EWE Studio’s powerfully primitive sculptural pieces speak of the rich artisan heritage of the region, amplifying the earthy integrity of industrious materials like wood, metal and stone to hone an evocative form of functionality. The Alquima collection listens to the lilts in Mexico’s evolutionary ancestral techniques, combining the distinct disciplines of various workshops to deliver three truly unique limited edition pieces, each one steeped in tradition, yet entirely progressive, founded upon the beauty of ambiguity.

Black Orizaba marble bestows the Humo table a sense of raw majesty, anchoring the base with a precious weight, salvaged directly from the quarry as a single piece. The poetic process that brings this brutal body into being renders each edition entirely unique, recalling the mountain range with its rugged slopes and crags. Crowned with a 2.6 meter-long countertop – meaty at 5cm thick – man’s connection to the wilderness reads through its artful treatment, charged with the charred color and character of the Japanese Yakisugi flame finish. Fire likewise makes a marvel of the Ceniza Chair, white oak wood carved by the deft hands of a master cabinetmaker before being blackened by the elements, eliminating all moisture. The stoic tripod strucure is topped with a backrest and slender seat, upholstered with obsidian leather. The undulating curves of the Magma light, meanwhile, nod to the bulbos blown glassware of Puebla, for which the region is famed. Collaborating with Nouvel Studio and with molds handcarved by local stonemasons, each ethereal bubble is blown and domed upon a base of cold bluing steel, its amber glow generated by the hand-hammered brass surface contained within. Talk about getting a feel for the place...at EWE Studio, you actually can.
